You are looking at a 2 Piece, 3 Hides, Traditional Plains Southern Style Cheyenne Buckskin Dress. Size 10. Total length 56 inches, bust 39, waist 36 and hips 42. This dress is pre-owned but was only worn once. I'm 5'5" and 139 lbs and it fits me nicely. The bodice (upper part of the dress) is a beige Tank top T-shirt to add more comfort as well as to make it easy to get in and out while getting dressed. The hides are all very soft, supple 2-3 oz deer skin. Color very light smoke tanned. Everything was hand sewn in lock stitch and all the fringes are hand cut and twisted just like it was done in the old days. The Cheyenne retained their social customs, traditions and dress long after other tribes had largely assimilated European culture. This dress was done that way. It has a nice "shape" to it. NOT a straight cut, but more flowing so the fringes can sway nicely with every graceful movement.
The Yoke's upper part is hand dyed with yellow ochre (yellow is a sacred color to the Cheyenne and represents the Sun's Power) and the neck part is edged with red felt (also a sacred color and symbolizes Life). There are about 38 Ring top Cowrie Shells all around the yoke (19 front, 19 back).Cowrie Shells were used as money for trade. The bead work (lane or lazy stitch) was done with 11 size opaque seed beads in blue, red and yellow with white (represents Dawn) as main color. 3 beaded bands on the yoke (or cape) are typical designs made by Cheyenne Women. Beads validated treaties and were used to remember oral tradition, as well as for exchange and currency. The Moccasins are typical one piece High Tops ( We're sorry but we could only insert 12 pictures, so if your interested please inbox us and we'll email some close-ups to you). Soft sole and size 7 1/2, with Size 11 opaque Seed Beads and decorated with antique Brass Spots, Cones, little Jewelry Tinklers as well as Brass Button's on the sides.Other Accessories: Belt Set. 2 square pouches, 1 Strike a Lite, 1 Awl Case and 1 Knife Sheath (Belt and Knife NOT included).
